About Kim

I have been performing and teaching music for the past 29 years.  I began my musical journey playing the flute at age 9, and I quickly fell in love.  I became passionate about music and wanted to learn everything I could.  In junior high school I wanted to join the jazz band, but was told that flute was not an instrument used in jazz.  I didn't let that deter me, and began learning the saxophone and have played jazz ever since.  I hold a degree in music performance on the flute from DePauw University with a jazz studies minor on the saxophone.  I have served previously as the assistant conductor and lead saxophonist of the Mile High Community Band in Denver. Currently I am the baritone saxophonist of both the Tivoli Club Brass Band and the John Philip Sousa Band in Denver.  I live in Lakewood, Colorado, and I mostly work with students from Deer Creek Middle School, Falcon Bluffs Middle School, and Chatfield High School. I offer in person lessons at Achord Music Studios and Do Re Mi Lessons in Littleton, Colorado, but also teach online and have a few students in other states!

I have studied flute under Anne Reynolds of the Indianapolis Chamber Orchestra, Rebecca Arrensen of the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra, and Barbara Gisler-Haase of the Vienna Conservatory of Music.  I've studied saxophone under Randy Salman of the DePauw University.  I am an alum of Interlochen Arts Camp, I spent a semester studying flute and opera in Vienna, Austria, and I've performed in masterclasses under Barthold Kuijken, Bradley Garner, Brooke Ferguson, Erica Peele, Thomas Robertello, and Barbara Kallaur.  I've had the opportunity to attend masterclasses led by Sir James Galway, Walfrid Kujala, and Ian Anderson of Jethro Tull.  In 2018 I performed as a soloist with the Canyon Winds Band in Colorado Springs. I regularly attend workshops and clinics on teaching music as well as perform regularly, so that I am always staying current and relevant with my students- most recently the National Flute Convention in Salt Lake City In 2019.  I teach students of all ages and abilities- just call or email for availability!

Studio Contract

Cancellation Policy

Successful music lessons are dependent on regular weekly attendance, and it is expected that the time that we agree on is "your" time, and that it will take precedence over other activities you may be involved in.  If you know you will be out of town or unable to attend a lesson at the beginning of the month, let me know and I will not charge you for that particular lesson.  In the event of a cancellation with 24 hours notice, we will schedule a makeup for the missed lesson.  If 24 hour notice is not given, payment is still expected for the lesson and a makeup is not guaranteed.

Practice Expectations

I am of the belief that music lessons can only be effective if the student is practicing at home in a focused and guided manner.  I would expect older students to have a good grasp of this, and the need for committed practice is reviewed regularly with all students, along with age-appropriate expectations and incentives.

Having a regular, uninterrupted time for practice is quite essential, and yields maximum results for your considerable investment.  My job is to be inspiring, enthusiastic, and to choose repertoire to strengthen skills.  The student's job is to take it from there, and be as prepared and enthusiastic at lessons as they can be!

There are really only 2 main "requirements" in my studio:

1) Students must really want to be here and be willing to learn.

2) Students have to practice.  An important part of my work is teaching my students how to use practice time effectively no matter what age or what level they are.  I expect students to practice a minimum of 90 minutes per week, although the ideal would be to practice daily, and end up somewhere around 150 minutes.  Each student will get a practice card for the semester that they are required to bring to each lesson.   If the student is not meeting minimum expectations on a regular basis, then I will discuss whether lessons are the right fit for the student with the parents.

What students and parents are saying:

"Kim is the absolute best at what she does! I'm a full time college student and part time daycare employee- my schedule is very hectic and busy. Kim has been so patient, kind, and accommodating to my schedule. I had a desire to learn piano with absolutely no prior knowledge and Kim was eager and driven to help me learn. She is very talented and extremely passionate about what she does. Her price is worth every penny and you can really sense that Kim loves teaching others about her passion!" - Melody P, adult piano student

"My daughter takes lessons from Kim, she is very loving and patient but is great about redirecting my distractible kiddo back on track. S just loves her and has learned a great deal in a very short amount of time. I had purchased books to use with a different teacher but that fell through, Kim was able to adapt to those books so I did not have to buy a new set. She's quick to reply to messages and very flexible with schedules. Taking lessons at her home was never uncomfortable for me or my S, we love going there." - Amanda K, parent of piano student

"Kim is an amazing instructor who takes the time to get to know her students and tailors her teaching style to meet their needs. From retired persons looking for a new hobby to elementary students and everywhere in between, Kim creates a personal connection and learning plan with her students and the results are clear in her teaching. She motivates my eight year old to do his very best, he loves going to lessons and even wants to practice so he can make Kim proud and win a prize from her goody chest! His ability and understanding of music grows weekly under her tutelage. I also have an adult friend who takes lessons from Kim, just as pleased with her results, a testament to Kim's ability to teach to any audience." - Erica G, parent of piano student
